SUITABLE SHADES WITH HIGH UV RESISTANCE
Which shades are suitable for the exterior façade of a house to guarantee high UV resistance? I suppose not all shades are colour-stable.
When tinting façade paints, it is important to choose colourants that offer high resistance to UV radiation. However, not all shades are equally stable. Bright red and orange tones, in particular, tend to be more vulnerable to fading over time.
For renovation projects, it is recommended to use a coloured undercoat before applying the final topcoat, especially when working with bright colours such as yellow, orange, or red. This helps improve coverage and enhances the long-term appearance of the finish.
On external walls exposed to sunlight, building regulations such as DTU 59.1 and 42.1 advise against the use of colours with a solar radiation absorption coefficient higher than 0.7. This typically includes shades with a luminance index (Y value) below 35 percent. In the CHROMATIC® fandeck, these colours are marked with a crossed sun pictogram. This recommendation is not due to poor lightfastness of the colour, but rather to prevent thermal stress that can damage the masonry or the paint layer.
We also recommend using our dedicated CHROMATIC® FAÇADE colour chart. It has been designed specifically to meet the needs of professional painters, architects, and building owners working on exterior projects. The shades in this collection are based on inorganic-mineral pigments, which offer excellent coverage, chemical resistance, and long-term protection against strong sunlight.
In certain countries, regulations concerning thermal insulation systems may also recommend using façade paints with a low solar absorption coefficient. This helps minimise heat build-up and protects the integrity of the insulation and wall structure.
